I turned my back on the Catholic church long ago. I couldn't bear to watch what people will say and do in the name of a god meant to be benevolent and loving.
Yes, I am judging. I'm willing to have my actions judged against a self-righteous hypocrite's actions any day of the week.
LFA - we've had some SHAMEFUL cases of priest perpetrated child molestation here in Canada. It is heartbreaking to see and hear how that abuse has negatively affected those children's lives.
I know someone personally who was affected by the whole "in the name of God" stuff. His father was a minister, not a priest, but yeah, beatings and molestation were recurrent.
I guess it's in every religion that positions of power begin to believe that they're as righteous in their acts as the God they believe in?
There's always someone whose going to take it too far.
rowan is right on target here. the problem is certainly bigger than the catholic church. the issue is the position of power and implicit trust these men are placed in. the catholic church exacerbates the problem by the pointless and burdensome requirements they place on priests thereby attracting a disproportionate number of troubled men who are struggling with difficult issues.

There's a bit more to it than that.
Oh yeah, there's the bigotry too.

they need to invent a new job "priest wanker" so they'll leave the little boys alone...
