It does tend to seem that way doesn't it? Preists molesting children is frequently in the news here, is it a problem in other countries too, or do all the pervy preists live in the US?

There's a bit more to it than that.

Oh yeah, there's the bigotry too.

I turned my back on the Catholic church long ago. I couldn't bear to watch what people will say and do in the name of a god meant to be benevolent and loving.

Yes, I am judging. I'm willing to have my actions judged against a self-righteous hypocrite's actions any day of the week.

LFA - we've had some SHAMEFUL cases of priest perpetrated child molestation here in Canada. It is heartbreaking to see and hear how that abuse has negatively affected those children's lives.

We've had a very serious, very horrible case here in Alaska as well. The part that really makes me angry is that many of these child molesting preists have been accused of wrong doing in other parishes, but instead of the Church dismissing them, they just move them to a new parish so that the preist doesn't have to face take responsiblity for what he's done. It sends a really bad message to the offender, like it doesn't matter what he does, he won't get into any trouble for it because he has the Church on his side.

The preist here is being brought up on formal criminal charges. It looks as though he will be spending a lot of time in prison. Perhaphs then he will truly understand what it means to be victomized.

I know someone personally who was affected by the whole "in the name of God" stuff. His father was a minister, not a priest, but yeah, beatings and molestation were recurrent.

I guess it's in every religion that positions of power begin to believe that they're as righteous in their acts as the God they believe in?

There's always someone whose going to take it too far.

rowan is right on target here. the problem is certainly bigger than the catholic church. the issue is the position of power and implicit trust these men are placed in. the catholic church exacerbates the problem by the pointless and burdensome requirements they place on priests thereby attracting a disproportionate number of troubled men who are struggling with difficult issues.

they need to invent a new job "priest wanker" so they'll leave the little boys alone...

then again, the altar boy outfits are sexy...
