It's weird how somebody who was brought up in a working class home, automatically becomes middleclass when they start work just because they've been to university and shit. Although I don't listen to Coldplay and I haven't got an Audi so I'm probably not quite there yet.

Where the devil are you Herge? You been out with your fancy woman?

So I take it you're not working class then?

I am working class to the core, it is my family background and my upbringing. However, when you attain a certain educational and professional status, you automatically become elevated to "middle class" in the eyes of society.

I'm really very common.

Yeah, social status is a strange thing. I think the term "Middle Class" here in North America is a generalized term that defines the majority of the population. I guess what defines the different classes here is mainly income. Whereas in the UK it involves income, accent, geography etc.

Here in Canada I consider myself "working class" and so are all my friends. However, like I said, the majority of the people consider themselves working class which would make us run of the mill.

My friend and I were talking the other day and she said "there's so many pretentious people out there." They aspire to be better than your average bear but in reality are only average and they make themselves look like twats. I can't stand those people.

Tina, if you have a PhD over here in Canada you are almost certainly a higher class... You would be paid very handsomely for research positions I'm sure.

Don't rub it in Connie, my salary is shit.

Herge's fancy woman? Do tell, do tell! :)

Hmm... Dave's working-class comment sounds very much like Herge's middle-class angst...

I think the barrier between lower class and middle class (in Canada) is simply money. The barrier between middle class and upper class/nobility is more about breeding and attitude.

Yes, that sounds about right Karen. You have to make over $50,000 CDN a year at least to be considered middle class here.... It doesn't really matter what you do for a job per se.

Oh, and Tina I wasn't meaning to rub it in. I'm sorry... I was more wondering if you had ever considered your options in North America....

Yeah, yeah, yeah! Let's steal Tina! Come to Canada, Tina! :) We can have librarian (and friends of librarians) parties!

Connie - I guess that makes me trash. :) $0 annually, baby!

Somehow, I think Tina would go down very well across the Atlantic ;-)

*ducks for cover*

What ever happened to YUPPIES?

Do you have that sort of thing across the water?

Ya wanna hear sad? I am the best off of anyone I know (apart from my friends in their 50's and up) and I would say I'm on the lower end of the middle class range. Shows what kind of gal I am huh?
